    Systematic Review of Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Hard Skills Training in Virtual Reality Environments

    Advances in immersive virtual reality (I-VR) technology have allowed for the development of I-VR learning environments (I-VRLEs) with increasing fidelity. When coupled with a sufficiently advanced computer tutor agent, such environments can facilitate asynchronous and self-regulated approaches to learning procedural skills in industrial settings. In this study, we performed a systematic review of published solutions involving the use of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) to support hard skills training in an I-VRLE. For the seven solutions that qualified for the final analysis, we identified the learning context, the implemented system, as well as the perceptual, cognitive, and guidance features of the utilized tutoring agent. Generally, the I-VRLEs emulated realistic work environments or equipment. The solutions featured either embodied or embedded tutor agents. The agents’ perception was primarily based on either learner actions or learner progress. The agents’ guidance actions varied among the solutions, ranging from simple procedural hints to event interjections. Several agents were capable of answering certain specific questions. The cognition of the majority of agents represented variations on branched programming. A central limitation of all the solutions was that none of the reports detailed empirical studies conducted to compare the effectiveness of the developed training and tutoring solutions.Peer reviewe

    PERFORMANCE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF SECURE ROUTING PROTOCOLS IN MANET

    Mobile adhoc network (MANET) is a temporary network setup for a specific purpose without help of any preexisting infrastructure. The nodes in MANET are empowered to exchange packet using a radio channel. The nodes not in direct reach of each other uses their intermediate nodes to forward packets. (MANET) environment of MANET makes it vulnerable to various network attacks. A common type of attacks targets at the underlying routing protocols. Malicious nodes have opportunities to modify or discard routing information or advertise fake routes to attract user data to go through themselves. Some new routing protocols have been proposed to address the issue of securing routing information. However, a secure routing protocol cannot single-handedly guarantee the secure operation of the network in every situation. The objectives of the paper is to study the performance and effectiveness of some secure routing protocols in these simulated malicious scenarios, including ARIADNE and the Secure Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing protocol (SAODV)

    The Engineering materials research group of Department of Engineering Design and Production of Aalto University arranged a postgraduate course on nuclear materials. The course consisted of three day long lecture session given in April 20-22, 2015. Lectures were given by professionals from nuclear power related research institutes (Aalto and VTT), nuclear industry and authority. The course also included a seminar session held October 8, 2015.     Micro-X-ray fluorescence image analysis of otoliths to distinguish between wild-born and stocked river-spawning whitefish captured in the Baltic Sea

    Strontium concentrations are low in fresh waters compared to seawaters. Therefore, wild-born river-spawning and stocked freshwater-reared whitefish Coregonus lavaretus L. display regions with low concentrations of strontium in the centre of their otoliths. Strontium in otoliths from wild-born river-spawning whitefish ascending the River Tornionjoki, river-spawning whitefish stocked as one-summer-old fingerlings caught ascending the River Kemijoki, and sea-spawning whitefish caught near the angstrom land Islands was mapped using mu-XRF. The strontium-depleted regions in the centre of the whitefish otoliths, measured using ImageJ, had mean sizes of 0.18 +/- 0.2 mm(2) (River Tornionjoki) and 2.3 +/- 0.3 mm(2) (River Kemijoki), whereas the otoliths from whitefish caught at sea lacked a strontium-depleted region altogether. Measurement of the area of the strontium-depleted region in whitefish otoliths provides a convenient method with which to differentiate between whitefish of different provenance and to determine the origins of whitefish in mixed catches

    Enhancing Remote Industrial Training Experiences with Asymmetric Virtual Reality : Experiences, Tools and Guidelines

    Featured Application: This paper presents a user study with industrial maintenance and installation experts of an elevator company. The results confirm that the remote training experience can be enhanced with asymmetric VR training. Training in virtual reality (VR) is a valuable supplementing tool for advancing knowledge transfer that results in increased efficiency and accuracy of technicians in fieldwork. However, COVID-19 pandemic restrictions made it impossible for VR training centers to operate on a full scale, forcing traditional face-to-face learning sessions to become remote. In this article, we investigate the asymmetric use of a VR training solution—among devices with different levels of immersion and control—to enrich the content of remote training sessions. The VR in this case can be seen as a source of visual and other contextual information to advance the effects of situated learning and enhance knowledge transfer. To evaluate this approach, we conducted a remote user study with ten industrial maintenance and installation experts. We also introduce the “Research Panel” tool to gather reactions of learners during the remote training session. The expert user study results demonstrate the usefulness and relevance of asymmetric VR to improve remote training sessions and other application industrial scenarios, while the “Research Panel” data provided detailed insight into the session flow. Building on the qualitative findings, we present design guidelines to aid the adoption of asymmetric VR in the industrial context.publishedVersionPeer reviewe
